The
Port Everglades
Inlet channel is wide and
supposed to be maintained to a depth
of 45’
deep. When approaching from the Atlantic, watch out for shoaling to
the north and east sides of the channel. The channel is
well marked by
red and green marks.
This
wide, deep inlet is very busy.
Port Everglades
services cruise ships and cargo ships.
Abundant pleasure boats from
Fort Lauderdale make this a crowded area with a lot of wakes.

This photograph shows a view of the inlet
looking out to sea. It
was taken from the inshore turning basin looking east.
This picture shows the same area, but from a greater
distance. It was taken from the cruise ship terminal
looking northeast towards the inlet.
Note the wide and busy inlet
channel. The inlet channel
intersects with the Intracoastal
Waterway (ICW seen on the right) and
the Port Everglades turning basin.
This area experiences
extremely heavy boat and ship traffic.
The picture shows the Port Everglades
cruise ship terminal located to the south of the
inlet.

This photo was taken from the inlet
channel (positioned in the middle of the inshore turning
basin.) The view is to the north
towards Fort Lauderdale's 17th Street Bridge.
Note that the pleasure boats
are heading north via the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW)
channel. The Intracoastal Waterway runs under the 17th Street
Bridge.
Port Everglades is well
patrolled by law enforcement (on land, in the air and on the
water.) Boaters should not get
near the cruise ships or cargo ships located in this area.
Boaters should take a slow and
patient approach when navigating this area. Crowded conditions and large wakes should
be expected. Law enforcement boats patrol this area around
the clock for both Port Everglades security and enforcement of Florida's recreational
boating laws.
